I have travelled a fair bit, and English is all I've really needed so far. It doesn't mean you shouldn't try to learn the native tongue, but, depending on the culture, they will either appreciate the effort, or prefer that you stop butchering their language.
One time, a friend and I were lost in Germany near Nuremberg… we were in kind of a suburb, and decided it was time to ask for directions. My friend got out our guide book, stared at the language section, formulated his question, and walked up to someone doing some gardening. He asked, and I thought he did a great job, but the German man let out a big sigh and replied with directions in perfect English.
As a Canadian, I speak a little French at least. A VERY little. Let's just say, if you're ever in France, and you need to tell someone that the grapefruit is in the library… I'm your guy.
